Preparing Your iPod
Important: If you are using an iPod Touch or iPhone you do not need to prepare your iPod for use with Senuti. You may skip this step.
The goal of these instructions is to change the preferences on your iPod without allowing iTunes to sync with the iPod. If you follow the instructions below, you should have no problems using Senuti.
Background
iTunes is set up by default to automatically sync with most iPods. This means that when you plug in your iPod, iTunes will start updating it immediately. Most Senuti users do not want this to happen. Specifically, if you've accidently erased your iTunes music library, iTunes will update your iPod by removing all of the songs from it without even asking you. There is a way to stop iTunes from syncing when you plug in your iPod, though, and that is to hold down the Command and Option keys. Follow the steps below to change your iPod's preferences so that it will not sync with iTunes.
Steps to change your iPod's preferences:
- Launch iTunes with your iPod disconnected
- Hold down the Command (Apple) and Option keys (this disables auto-sync)
- Continue to hold the keys down as you plug in your iPod
- After your iPod appears in iTunes, you can release the keys
- Click on your iPod in iTunes
- Under the "Settings" tab choose "Enable disk use"

Note: There is one additional preference that you might want to enable if you're recovering songs from your iPod with Senuti. That is the Manually Manage Songs preference. This will stop iTunes from syncing with your iPod every time you plug it in.

Start Using Senuti
After your iPod's preferences have been successfully changed, it is ready to be used with Senuti. For more information on using Senuti to Transfer music, please see Step 2 on our Quick Start Guide.
Once you complete your music transfer using Senuti, you may change your preferences in iTunes to have your iPod automatically sync if you wish, but leave disk use enabled and auto-launch off.
