Koku's reporting becomes extremely powerful with the use of smart tagging capabilities by allowing you to generate meaningful, descriptive, and intelligent reports on your spending or income patterns.

How Does it Work?

Smart Tagging uses tags the way they are intended — free of hierarchies. In a typical financial application, you may have labeled all your train, bus, flight, and taxi charges for the year under a tag such as Transportation. With Smart Tagging, you can create more meaningful tags. Here's an example:

Bus Fare	Transportation, Public, Bus
Train Fare	Transportation, Public, Train
Taxi Fare	Transportation, Public, Taxi
Airline Flight	Transportation, Flight

Using this method of tagging, a distribution report on transportation spending for the year would look something like this:

The ability to drill down into each tag for more specific reports is much more informative than just seeing the total amount spent on transportation. Don't you agree?

Now let's take smart tagging one step further. Often your transactions will fit multiple tags that may not directly relate. Continuing with our transportation example, suppose we get even more specific with our airline flight tags and also tag each transaction with the destination city and whether or not this was for Vacation or Business. Some sample transactions would then look like this:

With the added detail to our tags, we can now see a distribution report for a number of different scenarios. For instance, let's look at a breakdown of our flight spending for the year:

We might also want to look at a specific trip, such as our spending on our entire vacation to Baltimore:

Or what was spent in London on business:

Notice that we can see our flight spending appear in each of these non-transportation specific reports as well.

Automatic Smart Tagging

Koku provides the opportunity to utilize these advanced Smart Tagging capabilities at any time on any transaction. However, we understand that you may not wish to spend the time tagging all your transactions. Not to worry. Koku provides the option to auto tag transactions for accounts that are set up with Direct Connect. This means that transactions from a financial institution that provides SIC codes will be automatically tagged for you when Koku syncs.
